The Kip Mcgrath Story

After having taught in small country towns for several years Kip and Dugnija McGrath moved to a larger town in New South Wales in 1974. The tutoring business began there because they had bought a home they really could not afford. A second job was needed to pay the mortgage. At first Kip went to the students' homes. This proved to be difficult. Next a centre was set up in the garage of their home. At first only reading was taught. As the demand increased people also asked for tuition in Maths. They moved the centre to professional premises and began expanding. Before long six centres were established throughout the region. They taught 365 students each week.

Materials for the centres were purpose written, trialled and tested. Computer programs were developed. Every student was assessed before tuition was organised. Excellent, caring teachers were employed in the centres to assist students with any learning difficulties. Parents were kept informed of their children's progress throughout their attendance.

After 15 years, the core materials for the centres had been written and their success proven. It became obvious that franchising was the next step in growing the business.

In the first year only 3 franchises were sold. This enabled the company to test the material pack, the business system, the training course and the ongoing support. The success of these 3 franchises was the vital testing ground for further development. There are now over 200 centres throughout Australia.

The core materials are progressively upgraded and adapted. The computer programs are also kept up to date with the latest developments in technology and educational requirements. Manuals are produced to assist franchisees in the running of a successful enterprise. The training course and ongoing support is constantly revamped to accommodate the changes in franchisees' needs.

The rapid development throughout Australia attracted interest from other countries. The company is expanding and has developed programs to teach English as a foreign language and pre-schoolers.
